Backgammon Bill Robertie

As a two time world champion of backgammon at the World Championships in Monte Carlo, in both 1983 and 1987, Bill Robertie is one of the most recognizable names and talents in the game. Alongside his dual championships, Robertie also won the Pro-Am at Bahamas in 1993 and the Istanbul World Cup in 1994.

Like many of the world’s backgammon masters, Robertie has shown incredible aptitude in a plethora of different games of skill such as poker and chess. During his life Robertie won a U.S. Speed Chess Championship and his reputation as a true master of chess culminated in the writing of “Beginning of Chess Play.” Long known as a guru for his mastery of two games, Bill Robertie’s name is recognized around the world for his masterful playing and incredible teaching ability.

Bill Robertie’s book, “Backgammon for Serious Players” has long been studied as a source of information for players looking to expand their game beyond the basics to introduce analytic thinking to the game and change how players see the board.

Famous for his overly aggressive play, Bill Robertie has long preached the use of the doubling cube to add a degree of excitement to the game in which he excelled. His own matches have famously been cited as instances in which his aggression won him titles. Doubling on his last roll, Robertie was able to win the match by a hair.

Robertie has even explained his own thinking, stating that there is a particular situation in which doubling is called for and instances in which it is not. He prefers to call his style of play dynamic backgammon. For him, ownership of the cube means you have an extra turn to wait for your opponent to come to you.

Another of his Backgammon books, “Backgammon for Winners” focuses on play for beginning players as well as the advanced players out there. Starting with the basic setup of the board, he proceeds to slowly raise the difficulty level and show readers how to start handling complicated situations with analytical thinking, using careful prose and helpful diagrams.

Other books written by Bill Robertie include “501 Essential Backgammon Problems” and “Inside Secrets for Dynamic Championship Level Play”. He has also worked as the co-editor for “Inside Backgammon” a famous insider magazine on the game. Over the years, his books and magazine articles have helped teach and develop the backgammon skills of millions.
