Backgammon Varriants

This section gives you information on most of the backgammon variants that are played around the world. The old time versions have been covered to some extent in the backgammon history section. Here we present you the modern versions of backgammon. The basic rules are the same what differs is how the game starts.

Hyper-backgammon is one of the simplest variants, even if the rules are very similar to the standard backgammon, each side starts with three markers/checkers. The goal is to finish first.
LongGammon got its name from the positioning of all the checkers on the first position of the opponent.

Misere is the opposite of standard backgammon. In this game you win if you remove all your checkers last.

Nackgammon is bit more difficult than regular backgammon as you would start with two pairs of checkers on the first and second lines of your opponent, checkers taken from the lines where the regular game would line up five checkers.

Propositions

It consists of several interesting sub-variants. The staring positions of each side is different.
Handicap Matches - hard times for the one playing white as whenever e rolls 1 the black will move 1 instead. And if white throws double 1 then black moves 4 times one.

Two Rolls versus Choice - white is not allowed to play. Black will play twice each roll.

Ace-Mid Switch - again white is a bit in a bad starting position, with five checkers on the first point of black and 2 on the opponent's 12.

Snake - Black starts with nine of his checkers out. The rest of six are paired up on the white's first, second and third lines. White is set up as in the standard game.

Roll- over

It's not much of a variant of the standard game, and it may be annoying. Luckily roll over can happen only once. You may require your opponent after moving his checkers, to move them back and throw once more.

Domino backgammon

As I guess it's obvious for all of it's a combination of Backgammon and domino. The players use dominos instead of dice. The checkers of the two players are set in their standard positions. As for the dominos they are divided between the players. The top domino is 6-6. Also all dominos with a blank are not used. The remaining ones go as follows to the player with the whites respectively the one with the blacks.

Dutch backgammon

Is an interesting variation. Both players start with their checkers off the board. They introduce their checkers on the opponents board depending on the number thy roll. For instance a 3-2 roll allows the player to place his checkers on the second and third lines. You cannot take out your opponent's blot until you do not have at least one checker on your home board. The reintroduction of the checkers from the bar goes the same way as for standard gammon.

French backgammon

Is much like the dutch version. Its strength is the throwing of doubles as you are allowed to play your double as you would do with the standard game and then you can also move the other side of the dice. The other face of the dice is 7 minus the number rolled. That is if you roll 2-2, you play 7 minus 2, so you also play 5-5. Yet in case you can move only 2 or free checkers in the case of a double then you lose all the other moves.

Russian Backgammon

is a run in the same direction as both players start off board with all their checkers and you have to put put them on on the same board. Then you have to bear them off from the opposite board. Doubles, the same as with the French variant, is valuable as you can also play the complementary number that total 7 with the number thrown. If you roll 2-2 its complementary is 5-5. This is probably not a full list of backgammon variations as rules can be set by any 2 players. Some of you may not even agree with the names given to the variants presented above. Anyway the basics are the same. Should you know of any other variants we would be more then glad if you shared it with the community of Backgammon world.
